Hi ,
Dr. Wolfson here. Don’t forget to join me this Thursday live at 7pm ET on YouTube, Facebook or X when I’ll be discussing Why Most Blood Pressure Plans Fail — And How to Stay With the Ones That Work. Add it to your calendar and join us.
Now, let’s talk about something that hurts a lot of people’s blood pressure, and they don’t even realize it:
They’re drinking it.
Soda.
Juice.
Sweet tea.
Sports drinks.
Energy drinks.
Fancy coffee drinks.
Smoothies loaded with fruit and sugar.
Even “healthy” drinks that come in a bottle with a long ingredient label.
Here’s the problem.
When you drink calories and sugar, they hit your system fast.
Much faster than when you eat real food.
Why?
Because there is very little slowing them down.
No meaningful chewing.
Not much fiber.
Not much natural resistance.
So your body gets a quick surge of sugar.
That surge can push up insulin.
And when insulin runs high too often, bad things start happening for blood pressure.
Your body becomes more likely to store fat.
Your metabolism gets pushed in the wrong direction.
Your body may hold on to more sodium and fluid.
Inflammation tends to rise.
Your blood vessels do not function as well as they should.
That is a real issue.
Because healthy blood pressure is not just about how much salt you eat.
It is also about how healthy your metabolism is.
How inflamed your body is.
How stiff or relaxed your blood vessels are.
How much excess weight you are carrying.
How hard your body has to work all day long just to manage the fuel you keep throwing at it.
And liquid sugar is one of the easiest ways to overload that whole system.
That is why this matters so much:
When you drink your calories, you usually do not get the same fullness you would get from real food.
So you can take in a shocking amount of sugar and calories without feeling like you ate much of anything.
You finish the drink.
Your blood sugar goes up.
Your insulin goes up.
Your body stores more.
Your hunger often comes back quickly.
And the cycle repeats.
That is a terrible pattern for anyone trying to normalize blood pressure.
Now compare that to eating real food.
If you eat eggs, meat, vegetables, avocado, nuts, or fruit in its natural form, your body has to process it differently.
You digest it more slowly.
You generally feel fuller.
You are less likely to overconsume.
And your blood sugar and insulin response is often far more controlled.
That is one reason real food helps and liquid calories hurt.
Today’s challenge is simple:
Do not drink your calories.
For today, make your beverages as clean as possible.
Best choices:
Skip:
-
Soda (even diet)
-
juice
-
sports drinks
-
energy drinks
-
sweet tea
-
sweetened coffee drinks
-
sugary bottled beverages
This may seem like a small thing.
It is not.
For some people, this one shift alone is a major step toward better blood sugar control, weight loss, less inflammation, better vascular health, and better blood pressure.
So today, do not eat your drink.
Give your body real hydration instead of a sugar hit.
That is how you start taking pressure off the system.
To your heart health,
