Hi ,
Welcome to Day 1 of our 21-Day Lower Your High Blood Pressure Naturally Challenge.
We are glad you are here.
Over the next 21 days, we are going to share simple, practical steps to help you better understand your blood pressure and support a healthier heart—naturally.
Before sharing today’s tip, I invite you to join our Facebook group if you haven’t done so already. Our group is a great place to get answers to your questions, learn new tips about managing blood pressure and a forum to engage with other challenge participants. Take a minute now to join the group!
And today, we start with one of the most important basics:
Knowing how to check your blood pressure the right way.
If you are not checking it correctly, your numbers may not tell the true story.
Here are the main ways to check your blood pressure:
1. Home upper-arm monitor
This is the best choice for most people. It is easy to use, affordable, and usually more accurate than wrist or finger monitors. You can find the brand we recommend on Amazon.
2. Doctor’s office
This can be useful as it is a professional setting, but some people feel nervous at the doctor’s office. That stress can raise the reading.
3. Pharmacy or health fair machine
These can be convenient, but they are not always as accurate or consistent as a good home monitor.
My recommendation:
Use a quality home upper-arm monitor. It often gives you the best picture of what your blood pressure is doing in real life.
How to get an accurate reading:
- Rest for 5 minutes before checking
- Avoid caffeine, smoking, exercise, and alcohol for at least 30 minutes before
- Sit in a chair with your back supported
- Keep both feet flat on the floor
- Do not cross your legs
- Rest your arm on a table at heart level
- Put the cuff on your bare upper arm, not over clothing
- Stay still and quiet while the machine is reading
- Try to check it at the same times each day
Best times to check it:
For most people, these are the best times:
- Morning before food, caffeine, or activity
- Evening when things are calm
Checking at the same times each day helps you compare your readings more fairly.
How often should you check it?
If you are just getting started:
Check it twice a day for 7 days.
That means:
- Once in the morning
- Once in the evening
You can also take two readings each time, about one minute apart, and record the average.
After that first week:
If your numbers are stable, you may only need to check it a few times per week.
Check it more often if:
- Your numbers are high
- You recently changed your routine or treatment plan
- Your readings seem to bounce around
- You want to track how your lifestyle changes are working
One important reminder:
Do not panic over one reading.
One high number does not always mean something is terribly wrong.
One normal number does not always mean everything is perfect.
What matters most is the pattern over time.
That is why today’s action step is simple:
Take control by learning the right technique.
To help you do that, here is a short video showing you how to properly use a home upper-arm blood pressure monitor.

This is a great first step. Small actions, done the right way, can lead to big change over time.
Tomorrow, we will be back with your next simple step toward lower blood pressure and better heart health.
